Competition held at Elekta Australasian User Meeting

At the 2017 Elekta Australasian User Meeting (Newcastle, New South Wales, Nov. 10-12), Charge Radiation Therapist Karen Daly – of Olivia Newton-John (ONJ) Cancer Wellness & Research Centre’s Austin Health Radiation Oncology (Melbourne) – won the region’s first ever Monaco Plan Challenge, hosted by Elekta’s ANZ treatment planning team.

“The plan criteria was a complex pelvis plan with nodes,” says Shaun Seery, Senior Vice President Asia Pacific. “Within the case there were a number of competing goals, overlapping structures and complex geometries that made this a great challenge for our customers.”

Submissions were open for a month before the user meeting where customers could submit their plan and aim for a top score of 150 if all criteria were met. The case was discussed in depth at a pre-meeting workshop – coordinated by the Elekta ANZ treatment planning team – that noted all areas of difficulty within the plan.

The workshop provided an opportunity to give competitors advanced tips and tricks to assist in their clinical work and future plan competitions.

ONJ’s Karen Daly comes out on top

The winning submission by Karen Daly from ONJ’s Cancer Wellness & Research Centre was planned on a Versa HD™ system, an Elekta linac equipped with the advanced Agility multi-leaf collimator.

“Monaco can fully utilize the superior functionality of Versa HD, particularly the high-speed Agility MLC, which helps operators deliver highly modulated plans efficiently and effectively,” Seery adds.

“I really enjoyed the Monaco Plan Challenge,” Daly says. “It definitely promoted healthy competition within the department. I found that a simple prescription that balanced out the areas of conflict worked the best. I certainly would like to do more of these. They’re challenging and a good motivator to improve my planning skills.”
